I had always heard that the commander at Sand Creek massacre was a preacher, but Wiki claims he was defrocked. Why the hell they had a company of lancers I have no idea, but I do know that the lancer things was a Texas deal; they had a full regiment of the guys (tho the Texas military history page says the lances were never actually issued).

Anyway, they did charge with their polearms at Valverde and they did get chopped down. And, yes, somehow someone involved in raising the 21st Texas Cavalry decided that they were going to go Full Napoleon and scrounged up some real honest-to-Poinatowski lances. I understand that after their encounter with modern weaponry at Valverde the Texans 86ed the pigstickers and got them some firearms, so you wouldn't be seeing the lancers at Glorieta...

Still, interesting oddball little battle...FDChiefhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10607785969510234092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31246093.post-36122723999364206722013-03-09T22:59:37.886-07:002013-03-09T22:59:37.886-07:00Glorieta!!!
