I had confused students present me papers they'd written in previous classes -- hideous papers, horrendously riddled with every sort of possible error -- which had nonetheless received nice red check marks: O.K., or so they thought.<br /><br />No one had taken the time to give them the straight dope. These students were those who'd been written off as hopelessly behind. That they were, due to years of this sort sort of social promotion, and yet ... they had saved these papers, as though somehow proving their merit. It was really tragic to see the reality: <br /><br />Those who were going to make it did so despite the system; those who relied on the system to save them, sank.<br /><br />We are not homogeneous like Finland.
