Friday Jukebox: Poison and Wine

Remember where I talked about simple voice putting across a beautiful song?

Simply lovely.(Sorry for the ad, but it's worth waiting through, and h/t to Krugman, wherein I first heard this)

And this is for Lisa, with the gentle thoughts of another hopeful romantic.

  1. Oh, it absolutely is simply lovely, moving and true. Sung with feeling and understanding.

    Thank you for sharing.

  2. That was quite lovely chief, I'm gonna have to look through their works.

Since I'm currently sitting on my Canadian hobby horse I'd like to toss out a Canadian artist who deserves more awareness: Loreena McKennitt
    Lady of Shalott

Unfortunately it's not an official video (can't find one). It's also a bit long but that's how we roll in Canuckistan.

  4. Lisa: you're welcome.

Leon: Lovely! Thank you! I love the Tennyson in print, and this is a gorgeous adaptation. And it's not "long"...it's as long as it needs to be. God forbid that the rest of us force our music into the 3:45 pop song length demanded by the wasteland of FM radio...

  5. She also does a song version of "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes.

  6. One thing I'd like to draw your attention to; the final moments of the video, after the last note has ceased, and the two musicians sit for a moment, and barely glance at each other, and exchange a little nod and thoughtful smiles.

The interesting thing is that these two are not in any way together romantically - each has an inamorata and a completely separate emotional life. But at that moment they have a sort of connection beyond mere emotion.

That's power. There just seems to be something about the fusion of words and music that lies deep within a whole lot of us.

  7. Thanks for pointing it out, I assumed they were a couple also.

On a lighter note, I stumbled across an Ukrainian folk-rock band doing a cover of Bon Jovi's "It's My Life".
