Because it's dark, and the winter is coming, and my family is asleep, and I need the plaintive, precise clarity of the voice of the mistress of the blue note.
"Maybe I've never really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude"
and,
"I really don't know love at all" (Both Sides Now)
Very sad and wistful. I read one recent study which said the average person enjoys 11 minutes of true communion in his lifetime. Some say not that. Why can't we do it?
Perhaps we can. But we are by nature monkeys; restless but indolent, slothful but voyeuristic seekers of the new and different.
Building a deeply reciprocal love - whether for another person, for a place, for an idea - means doing all sorts of things that are difficult for our monkey-nature; being patient but insistent, being generous but steadfast in demanding our integrity and respect, listening to and accommodating our beloved while conveying our needs and desires with honesty. On the physical level it means foregoing vanity and defensiveness while offering intimacy, on the emotional level risking pain while opening our hearts to another.
So we CAN...but it's damn difficult. And given human nature, the probability is that we will find that the person we're trying to connect with doesn't fit well with us. So we spend a lot of time trying and a lot of time failing. Some of us give up. So "settle". Some remain hopeless - or hopeful - romantics and keep searching.

FDC,
Urge For Going is one of my fav songs.
Circa 1967.
I hate seeing her with a electric guitar hanging on her body.
