From the Fire Direction Center:This holiday isn't exactly my thing. But for those whose it is; may this night of yours be blissful and happy. May you be overwashed by the love of those you love around you. And may you wake to peace and content.
I love David Sedaris's Christmas Chronicles, and the harried mom yelling at her her distressed kid: "Get up on that man's lap or I'll give you something to cry about!"
He explains it as parent's way of dealing with a world they cannot control, and so creating the simulacrum of the life they'd envisioned.
