It's a gourd. Or some sort of dried nut thing. And it's carved. Like, by a Chinese person. It's a carved Chinese nut-dried-gourd thing. Did I mention it's carved by a Chinese person?

Very odd, indeed. But it reminds me of netsukes, which I do appreciate both for their delicate humor and functionality.
I like design as an element of function. Not so sure the purpose of the intricate nut.
