Home from the Hill

Just a brief note to mark our return from our second real "family" vacation, a short Memorial Weekend trip over the Cascades to the Bend region of the Oregon High Desert. The kiddos said that of all the things we saw and did they liked the hot tub in the room at the Riverhouse in Bend the best. So much for the grandeur of Nature. But they agreed that the lava cave and the volcano and the hawks and Smith Rocks were the second-most awesomest after that.More later, plus the End of Perfection in the House of Pane.

That looks like a very lovely place to be. I'm glad you were able to get away.

What's funny is that for all that the idea was to introduce the kiddos to our beautiful Oregon High Desert, when I asked the sleepy, travel-sated littles what their very favorite part of the entire trip was - the very, very, best - they both shouted "the hot tub in the hotel!"

But the weather was so cold and wet that I think camping would have been a fail. Hopefully we can return later this summer and try to get a tad closer to Nature...

Ah, well -- I think most of the young 'uns today are rather cossetted :) But yes, I think it is essential for everyone to know at least what camping is like -- to have the merest whiff of privation and to understand that one can make do.
